Christmas Has Come Early! Read on...
Hey guys and gals! Christmas has come early this year here at #MakeZaneBetter!
Remember, in October, when I told you that Zane had visited a fertility treatment while still at St. Jude? And remember that I told you Zane had not fully completed his forms accidentally and as luck would have it, the fertility clinic was still “sitting” on the samples, rather than destroying them as customary when a patient passes.
Well, I FINALLY have an update. I left off with having to produce some documentation and plead my case to not have Zane’s genetic material destroyed. So we’ve had a couple of months of some legal back and forth and some paperwork shuffling. All the while it was a very long shot. But you all know I don’t go down without a fight. And even if I’m on what appears to be the losing end, I’m gonna keep swinging! I’m happy to report that my tenacity and ability to take some of the legal advice and wordsmith my way into a win! That’s right! I’m the winner winner chicken dinner!
So what does this mean? It means I’ve managed to save Zane’s fertility samples. They WILL NOT be destroyed. It means I am now the owner of Zane’s genetic material and it means I am the ONLY one who can make decisions on its potential use. So, Battle #1 ends, but it’s still very complicated. Zane’s sperm count was very low we discovered. This was probably NOT due to his cancer treatment, but rather because the area where his brain tumor was is vital to producing reproductive material. That means that there will be the need to have some scientific help in creating life should Zane’s samples be used. There are various scenarios that could play out where that might happen, but for now, Zane’s life-giving material is here with us to stay!
So happy Christmas to me! Here’s a pic of me and the Zaner the last Christmas holiday we spent together before he became sick. #CloudSkaterZaner
